Trend Alert: The midi skirt

Remember when you swore you would never turn into your mother? Well it may be about to happen, but in the nicest  – and chicest – possible way. That mainstay of the sensible woman’s wardrobe, the mid-calf length skirt, was one absolute surprise winner on the spring/summer 2011 catwalks as diligent secretary-style models showed that you don’t have to flash the flesh to look sexy. This summer it’s one of the hottest trends around and here’s my guide to making it work.

1. Banish thoughts of prudishness and focus on the details. A tightly belted waist at Fendi and Louis Vuitton ensure an hourglass silhouette.

2. A slinky, tight fitting pencil skirt as at Celine is best paired with heels or long boots for a Jessica Rabbit wiggle. Alternatively try a pleat midi skirt with wedges. I’m a big fan of this bright yellow pleat skirt from Selfridges.

3. It’s all in the attitude. Work it ladies!

Hello boys! So curves are back this season. Blame the success of Mad Men, where sexy secretary Christina Hendricks shows off her hourglass figure in a selection of retro chic outfits. Hendricks, as Joan Harris, uses her bewitching charms with all the theatricality of Marilyn Monroe. Her performance is all about the cartoon type curves of Jessica Rabbit with a hefty dose of glamour, rather than the gross and tacky over the top sexuality of the previous poster girl for breasts – Jordan.

Scarlett Johansson is another icon for the sudden fashion interest in curvy figures, rather than flat chested models. In the real world it’s time to celebrate your assets with a sexy lace bra that’s all about femininity rather than trussed-up so-called sexiness. Lingerie label Agent Provocateur do some of the most covetable bras around with an emphasis on elegance. Try this Love Demi bra in black. It’ll give you a great cleavage, the lace detailing is beautiful and the cute bows on the straps add a sweet touch.

Trend Alert: Peter Pan collars

Get ready for a happy ever after, Disney princess style, as this week’s hottest trend is all about ultra cute Disney collars. From Peter Pan collars to Minnie Mouse-esque rounded ones, Alice in Wonderland bibs and pointed Sleeping Beauty styles this trend is about tapping into your inner six year old!

Already a favourite of the new, demure Victoria Beckham and Brit fashionista Fearne Cotton, the Peter Pan collar has a kooky, vintage style that is a welcome respite from a December spent dressing like Jessica Rabbit!  To nail this trend, look for little extras, like delicate frills, puff sleeves, lace edging and silk-covered buttons to add to the retro look.

This black sheer chiffon blouse from Warehouse at House of Fraser is the perfect example of how to make this super cute collar-style look grown-up and sophisticated. In 100% silk, the contrast between the sensuous sheer fabric and sweet white lace collar earns it extra style points. This would work as well with jeans and heels for a night out, as with a simple pencil skirt for the office. Plus it’s currently only £10 in the sale, how can you resist?
